BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
  • A usually circular or oval design engraved in intaglio, often in imitation of classical cameos. The relief impression made by a plaquette may be in another material (e.g. gesso) inlaid into the covering material (and into the thickness of the board if the design is deep enough), or it may be impressed directly into the covering material, with or without the use of a metal leaf. They may also be painted.
