SCOPE NOTE
  • A strong or coarse unbleached cloth made of hemp or flax, used from the 1760s on British and American schoolbooks as a covering material, and more generally as a spine lining material. Where the source of the fibre is known, it can be added to the term (e.g. linen canvas).
