SCOPE NOTE
  • A type of carbon black characterized as a deep, saturated, velvety black color. It is the oldest known black pigment. It is produced by burning oil, usually coal-tar creosote, in shallow pans, in a furnace with the draft regulated to give a heavy smoke cloud.
