SCOPE NOTE
  • Gold leaf ground into a powder and mixed with honey or other binder, applied to bindings with a brush. It differs from gold leaf in having a somewhat granular appearance when viewed under magnification. It takes its name from the mussel shells in which it was originally packaged.
