SCOPE NOTE
  • Board material made by pasting together pieces of sheet material most often but not always paper and, frequently, re-used paper. Boards made from laminations of parchment, tanned skin and alum-tawed skin are known from the middle ages, but the introduction into Italy from the Islamic world, where the practice had already been in use for two or three centuries, in the fifteenth century of boards made from pasted laminations of paper transformed the appearance and weight of western European bookbindings, and their use spread across Europe, reaching England in the early sixteenth century.
