- A specialised warship or naval auxiliary constructed for the transport and laying of mines, which are generally carried on rails laid internally the length and launched through doors at the stern. Three types may be recognised, the most common being the Mine Transport or Exercise Minelayer which is relatively slow, small and unarmed, and is used to lay defensive minefields in waters not subject to enemy threat. Vessels of this type have frequently been converted from merchant service. Fast Minelayers and Submarine Minelayers were used to lay mines covertly in enemy waters; these types are not represented in Scottish waters.
